Getting Fired vs. Getting Laid Off
Getting Fired vs. Getting Laid OffGetting Fired vs. Getting Laid OffYouve recently lost your job. Especially if the termination was a surprise, you may have a lot of questions about your situation. But right now, theres no more important question than this were you fired or were you laid off? Being fired and laid off are two distinct ways of losing your position, and the difference can impact your eligibility for unemployment, as well as your hiring prospects for the future. Therefore, its a good idea to be very clear about the precise nature of your termination, should you lose your job. If that sounds like it should be an easy distinction to make, youre right ideally, your former employer would be very clear about the nature of your separation from the company. But as we know, the real world is often far from perfect. Heres what you need to know about the differences between being fired and being laid off, and how to know where you stand when you lose your job. When an Employee Is Fired An employee can be fired for a variety of reasons. Perhaps the most common reason for being terminated for cause is an unsatisfactory wertmiger zuwachs on the job. Workers might also be fired for misconduct, not complying with company standards, taking too much time off, damaging company property, embarrassing the organization publicly, or otherwise failing to adhere to the terms of his employment contract. When an employee is fired, there is no expectation of being rehired at a future date. This type of termination is not temporary and is related to the employees performance or behavior, not to the companys financial situation. When an Employee Is Laid Off When an employee is laid off, it typically has nothing to do with the employees personal performance. Layoffs occur when a company undergoes restructuring or downsizing or goes out of business. In some cases, a layoff may be temporary, and the employee is rehired when the economy improves. In some cases, laid-off e mployees may be entitled to severance pay or other employee benefits provided by their employer. Generally, when employees are laid off, theyre entitled to unemployment benefits. Determine the Nature of Your Termination The first thing you need to figure out, as a newly terminated employee, is how your former employer will characterize your separation from the company. If you are an at-will employee and workers in most states in the U.S. are your employer is under no obligation to furnish you with a reason for your termination. But its still appropriate for you to ask them how theyll refer to your termination when speaking to future employers and the state unemployment office. Release of Claims Typically, employers will ask laid-off employees to sign an employment separation agreement, sometimes (but not always) in return for a severance package. Its always a good idea to take time to read and consider the agreement before signing. Dont sign anything in the heat of the mom ent, directly after learning of your termination. In addition, its often wise to consult an employment attorney. Collecting Unemployment To collect unemployment, you typically need to have lost your job through no fault of your own. People who are laid off are likely to receive unemployment because they left due to restructuring rather than personal performance. People who are fired are less likely to receive unemployment because they left due to issues with their personal performance. However, if a fired employee can argue that their firing was unfounded or unrelated to performance, he may be eligible for unemployment. If you are unsure whether or not you qualify for unemployment, check with your state unemployment office. Know Your Rights If you lose your job unexpectedly, its important to know where you stand. You may be legally entitled to pay for unused time off, for example. Your former employer should also tell you what to expect in terms of receiving your last payche ck, rolling over retirement benefits, and accessing COBRA coverage. Its also important to know whether your separation from the company counts as wrongful termination. If you were fired for certain discriminatory reasons, asked to commit an illegal act, or because youre a whistleblower, you may be protected under state, federal or contract law. Consult an employment attorney for more information about your specific situation.

Army Job Description 12C Bridge Crewmember
Army Job Description 12C Bridge Crewmember Army Job Description 12C Bridge Crewmember Bridge builders are highly-skilled engineers and are among the Armys most valued experts. There is any number of scenarios where a Bridge Crewmember would need to step in to save the day, whether its building safe passage for a crossing during a combat operation, or making rough terrain more easily passable for platoons and squads. If the bridge crewmembers arent around, in many cases, the Army cant move forward (literally). So this role is crucial to keeping the Army going where it needs to. This job is categorized as Army military occupational specialty (MOS) 12C. Duties These soldiers operate bridge trucks and light vehicles and act as deckhands on bridge erection boats. They prep bridge sites, which includes rafts, and other bridge operations, and install kedge anchorage systems, wire obstacle material (think barbed wire), overhead anchorage systems and demolition firing systems. Theyll also launch and retrieve ribbon bridge bays, and assemble and maintain military fixed and float bridges. This work is performed in all kinds of scenarios and weather, including while under enemy fire, in rain and snow and extreme heat, and during natural disasters. In short, MOS 12C is not just a role where youre looking at blueprints and engineering plans. Youll get your hands dirty and possibly see combat action, in this job. Training for MOS 12C Job training for bridge crewmembers will include 14 weeks of One Station Unit Training, which includes Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training. There may be scenarios where youll be working alongside other engineering soldiers, such as MOS 12B, combat engineers. Their job involves placing and detecting explosives and preparing firing positions for combat situations, so a close working relationship between 12B and the bridge crewmembers is obviously important. Qualifying as an Army Bridge Crewmember Youll need a score of at least 87 on the combat (CO) area of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) tests. Theres no Department of Defense security clearance needed for this job, but you do need a valid state drivers license. If you are colorblind, you wont be eligible for MOS 12C; normal color vision is required. Similar Civilian Occupations to MOS 12C The skills you learn as an Army bridge crewmember will help prepare you for practically any position in the field of construction. While not all of your training will translate directly, since much of what you learn is how to build structures quickly in combat situations, youll probably be overqualified to work on most construction sites. You may even consider pursuing a career as an engineer or architect if you want to continue building things from scratch. These two professions will mean additional training and licensure, so get to know the requirements in your area.

Translating Job Ad Jargon into Plain English
Translating Job Ad Jargon into Plain English Translating Job Ad Jargon Translating Job Ad Jargon into Plain English Job ads have their own jargon, and it can be helpful when writing your resume and cover letter to understand what it means when an employer says you should be a self-starter or xxx skills would be a plus. The job ad pictured here is a real posting pulled from Monster.com (with identifying details removed). Using actual phrases from this ad, what follows are some translations to help job seekers understand what the employer is really looking for. Very small team They work together on everything, so everyone has to play well together or it won't work. No prima donnas. No body odor. No aholes. No whiners. Self-starter They want someone whose motto is Just do it, (or in redneck-speak, Git-r-done!)A self-starter doesn't sit around and wait to be told what to do next. S/he sees what needs to be done, asks questions if necessary, and does it. Pitch in and do whatever is needed Occasionally, you will be asked to go pick up bagels for a meeting or help stuff 1,500 envelopes for tomorrow's trade show. The person they hire will need to understand that no task is beneath them if it contributes to the success of the business. Flexibility and ability to work well in a team are essential This basically reiterates all of the above, which tells you how important these things are to the employer. Essential qualities are generally non-negotiable (unlike those that would be a plus). Order processing, entering orders, following the order through , answering phones, sending out catalogs, filing These duties are all pretty easy to learn, so the important thing to stress is how well and accurately you can do them. Attention to detail They're looking for the kind of person who doesn't make stupid mistakes that embarrass the company, such as typos or transposed numbers, or even such small details as crooked shipping labels. Excellent communication skills You're the face of the company when you're speaking or corresponding with clients. They don't want someone who sounds like an ignorant, gum-smacking thug, or who writes like a 3rd grader. Good math skills Same idea as above. Perfect words and perfect numbers. Cheerful, get-it-done attitude Don't whine, don't sigh, don't roll your eyes, don't call in sick on the day the team is supposed to clean out the file cabinets. Common sense This is pretty self-explanatory (unless you lack the trait in question). They want an employee who will think things through and who knows it's better to ask a stupid question than make a stupid mistake. Ability to learn quickly It's frustrating to train someone who forgets it all the next day. They want the kind of person who asks questions, takes notes, creates cheat sheets, and doesn't claim to understand if they dont. Office and customer service experience are a plus This goes back to the fact that duties and directly related experience are less important to them than attitude and personality. When qualifications are listed as a plus, that means theyre non-essential. They would be nice to have, but it's not a deal breaker if you dont have them. The environment and dress are casual, but our commitment to the work we do is very professional They want someone who, while wearing jeans and a hoodie, can present a professional image on the phone and in writing. Pride in maintaining high standards They are proud of their company, and they want you to be proud, too. No slackers or shoddy workers. Once you get used to thinking like a hiring manager, it's easy to see what these common terms really mean. Armed with that knowledge, you can tailor your resume and cover letter to show the employer that you understand their business needs, and have what it takes to fulfill them. How to Get a Job in the Music Industry
How to Get a Job in the Music Industry How to Get a Job in the Music Industry Despite what some people may try to tell you, theres no magic bullet when it comes to getting a job in the music industry. In this day and age, the business is so large and complex, you may have trouble getting noticed. Your best shot at getting work in the music business is to move to an area where the music industry is a major employer, like Los Angeles, New York City, or Nashville. But if youre determined to make your mark in your hometown, in addition to hard work and hustle, there are a few ways you can increase your chances of being hired in the music business. Here are a few suggestions. Create aJob Many people get their start in the music industry just by doing their own thing. Lets say you want to be a promoter. Dont wait around for a promotion company to hire you. Find some local musicians, arrange a few shows for them, do a good job of promoting them, and make connections with other local musicians who want the same treatment. From there, its your choice if you want to keep doing the indie thing or if you want to parlay your experience into a slot at a promotion company or with a more established individual promoter. And yes, this course of action can be repeated for just about any musical profession. Be Flexible So lets say in the above example, our promoter cant find any promotion work, and no one in town is playing any music he can convince people to buy a ticket to see. Maybe he should shift his focus somewhat. Perhaps theres a record store that needs a product buyer for the genre of music he knows the best. That might be his in. While working at the record store, he will get to know label reps and people from the local music scene. If theres no record store in your town, try finding venues: clubs or concert halls where you could work the door, or tend bar. Music clubs are where the action really happens anyway, so any foot-in-the-door opportunity will introduce you to people you want to make connections with. Get an Internship Some large music companies make internships available only to college students, but others are open to all applicants; dont assume your chances are over if youve graduated or are no longer in school. Another method that works especially well with indie music companies is to just approach them and offer your services. Some companies may have never thought about hiring an intern; they may let you come by, make some coffee and stuff some envelopes just to observe what the biz is like. Work hard, pay attention, and this could be your big break. Job Listings Many music industry jobs are filled through word of mouth, but you can find out about openings and how to apply on company websites. If you can score a human resource persons name, see if she would grant you an exploratory interview at least. Since hard work and creativity are required to be successful in the music industry, its not surprising that those very traits are required to get a foot in the door. Make contacts when- and wherever you can and never be too proud to get any kind of music industry experience or pass up any chance to study how the business works. While no guarantee youll land a job, taking these steps will only increase your chances of getting noticed by those who make hiring decisions.

The strange way being good hurts your willpower
The strange way being 'good' hurts your willpower The strange way being 'good' hurts your willpower I learned how to respect authority from my father. At the top of a huge water slide at a theme park, he put me, my siblings and cousins in a huge, round raft, then started to get in himself. âNo sir, thatâs too many,â said the attendant. My father simply replied, âHup, too late!â Then jumped in and shoved off. We caught air on the bumps, making the ride much more wild than it would have been, had we followed the rules.Dodging the regulations of anyone with a whistle or a name tag became my favorite game. I avoided homework in sixth grade and, when I had a solid 0% in the class at midterm and my parents grounded me for six weeks, I filibustered my way out of my punishment by the second weekend. For years at school, I did the least amount of work possible, then crammed for tests. In high school, I had the best fake ID.But, the same sass and laziness I used with my home life got me nearly fired from almost every job I had in high school. When I graduated, I stood in a cap and gown, knowing I was supposed to be educated, but that I only looked educated on paper. Drinking too young, as well, had its consequences. Iâm lucky nothing terrible happened, but I still wish I hadnât been so out of control so young. As an adult, I learned that there are consequences, and then there are Consequences. Little consequences are the human-imposed rules that I can work around, hack, or ignore. They are a parentâs training ground for real life, a bossâs way to make sure the organization runs smoothly, and a governmentâs standards for building a society. They are human, and so they are flawed and breakable. I find it fun to find the cracks in the system and sneak through.Consequences with a capital C are lifeâs natural effects of our human actions. I can sneak past the guard and ignore the sign at the aquarium that says donât touch the marine life, but that doesnât mean a turtle wonât bite my finger off. I can smoke cigarettes when no oneâs looking and do use myself in perfume to hide the smell, but I canât sneak a smoking habit past lung cancer. Much later than it should have taken me, I finally understood that discipline is the way you obey the laws of the universe. But still, I donât think Iâll ever rid myself of the part of me that loves to be bad. There is the Perfect Paulette I know I should be, and want to be. That woman I could be just six months out: more fit, more dedicated to her craft, more chic and not so loud. Less likely to order the steak burrito with sour cream and guac. When I move toward her, by reading, writing, working, yoga-ing, or meditating, I feel âgood.â When I cut out to go to a band, join my friends at the beach, or hop in the car for four-day weekend, I feel âbadâ in that way that induces guilt, but also, alternately, satisfies my inner Bart Simpson, laughing and thinking, âSuckers.âThe problem arises when the only sucker is me. As an adult, I have no more teachers, no parents as guardian s. Iâm my own boss, and would love to keep it that way. The important distinction is that the me who is the sucker is Me Tomorrow or Me Ten Years From Now. Entirely separate from Me Today.âWhen reflecting on the future self, the brainâs activation is identical to when it is considering the traits of another person,â writes Kelly McGonigal in The Willpower Instinct, a book that has helped me change the way I see and move toward my goals. So the Paulette of Next Year can feel like another kind of authority figure, someone trying to make me do something I donât want to do today. When I screw myself over, by getting in debt, being hungover, or procrastinating on my work until it becomes a flurry of panic typing, I rail against this person inside. âYouâre the worst!â I tell myself.According to McGonigal, Iâm going about this all wrong. Firstly, she says, berating yourself for being âbad,â is only more likely to keep you from acting in the way you want to act. Guilt i s a stressor, firstly, and stress weakens your willpower.Secondly, by moralizing my behavior, labeling it as âgoodâ or âbad,â Iâm opening myself up to the risk of moral licensing.âWhen you do something good, you feel good about yourself,â writes McGonigal. âThis means youâre more likely to trust your impulses - which often means giving yourself permission to do something bad.âWe donât really want to be that good, her research has found. Iâm just not that motivated to be Perfect Paulette. I really just want to be Good Enough Paulette. So, for example, if I have a kale smoothie for breakfast, a behavior I label as âgood,â then Iâm more likely to feel like I deserve to be âbadâ for lunch and go for the McChunky Fatty Special. As Nir Eyal points out in his post about why fitness apps make us fat, âexercise causes many people to overeat by giving them permission to indulge.âMcGonigal cites a study in her book that showed that people who felt they ha d expressed statements proving they cared about equality were more likely later to display sexist or racist biases. People are more likely to cheat and steal after theyâve purchased products that are good for the environment. People donate 60% less to charity after theyâve been primed to think about a time they acted morally. So I every time I high-five the angel on my shoulder because I worked out or finished an article, it induces a little wink to the devil on my other shoulder and a knowing âmeet me later for a pizza and a Netflix bingeâ nod. Because we deserve it. Meanwhile, when I average out my habits, Iâm no closer to Perfect Paulette.âAnything you moralize becomes fair game for the effect of moral licensing,â writes McGonigal. âIf you tell yourself that youâre âgoodâ when you exercise and âbadâ when you donât, then youâre more likely to skip the gym tomorrow if you work out today. Tell yourself youâre âgoodâ for working on an important proj ect and âbadâ for procrastinating, and youâre more likely to slack off in the afternoon if you made progress in the morning. Simply put: Whenever we have conflicting desires, being good gives us permission to be a little bit bad.âWhat you should do instead, says McGonigal, is label your behavior as either getting you closer or further away from what you really want. Instead of focusing on the progress youâve made by being âgood,â focus on how committed you are to your goal, and remember the why behind it. Any time you catch the voice in your head berating yourself for being âbad,â remind yourself that you are only increasing the likelihood that you will repeat this undesirable behavior. When I remind myself that whatever Iâm doing is only getting me further from what I want, there is no imaginary future boss that Iâm sneaking past. There is only myself, in the now, hoping to enjoy the fruits of my labor in the future, instead of the unpaid bill from my neglect. I feel a certain shift in my attitude away from the enjoyment of breaking the rules, and fully realize that no one is being fooled except myself. It feels like maturing, a process long-awaited by my family. This shift has taken the joy out of being bad and replaced it with a centered knowledge that I am the one taking care of myself for my deepest reasons. Iâm not Perfect Paulette, and never will be, but Iâm me, today, taking responsibility for me, tomorrow, not because it is good or bad, but simply because itâs what feels most integrated with the life I envision for myself.Hereâs the gist: Moralizing your choices as good or bad opens you up to the risk of moral licensing. Berating yourself for being bad when you make the wrong choices only increases your chances of messing up again. Labeling your behavior as getting you either closer or further away from your ultimate goals is a powerful way to get around moral licensing. Congratulating yourself on your progress induces the effect of moral licensing. Using your progress to instead remind yourself how committed you are to your goal will re-up your willpower to achieve it. Catching the inner voice berating your past behavior and turning it toward planning a different outcome for the next day will make you less likely to repeat that undesirable behavior and get what you really want in the long run. How to Avoid Scam Job Posts
How to Avoid Scam Job Posts How to Avoid Scam Job Posts The danger of seeking out any content on the internet, including job postings, is that there is always a chance you will encounter a scam. At Simply Hired, we use reasonable efforts to investigate every suspicious job post we become aware of, to protect job seekers from potential fraud. Despite our efforts to ensure job quality, the amount and variety of content posted on Simply Hired each day makes it impossible for us to catch every offender. Thatâs why itâs essential that you as the job seeker remain vigilant in your search efforts. Watch out for these warning signs and always report any suspicious job posts you find on our site. Here are some questions to ask and some tips to follow when it comes to distinguishing fake job postings from legitimate job content that you find online. 1. Is the job too good to be true? If a job posting looks too good to be true, it generally is. Promises of signing bonuses, unlimited earning potential, work-at-home contracts, etc. are often just ploys that encourage job seekers to give up personal information. There are definitely exceptions to this rule. Do your research on sites like Better Business Bureau and Ripoff Report to see if anyone else has complained about scams run by the company. Is the job trying to sell itself to you? All a job posting needs is the facts about the job and the company. If a job includes marketing language, especially in the job title, be careful. Here are some examples of marketing phrases to look out for: âJoin an awesome team today!â âNo experience necessary!â âGuaranteedâ employment or income 2. Is the job too generic? Look for these warning signs of generic-looking scam jobs: The job seems like it could be at any company in any city. There are no details included regarding the actual job duties. The same job description or parts of the same job description are posted under different company names. The application is hosted on a generic form website (like forms.google.com) 3. Is the job posting full of errors? Bad spelling and grammar are common warning signs of spam. Also look for errors or inconsistencies in the information. Does the job description contain more than one different phone number, address or email? Does the description match the job title and location? The following is a REAL example of a job posting that is likely to be fraudulent: Warehouse Worker Forklift (no experience no problem) With or with out experience, wiling to train and certify 1st, 2nd and 3rd shift available, Wemon Encouraged, felon friendly No experience necessary, willing to train if you qualify. We are seeking a career-minded Forklift Operator to join our day shift and support the Operations Team in Phoenix! The company name given in the posting is an alias of a company that falsely promises employment if you first pay them for a certification. The name is disguised to prevent you from learning about the company through an online search. This particular company goes by many other names, making it difficult for job listing companies to keep them off their sites. Military Hospital Ships
Military Hospital Ships Military Hospital Ships Hospital ships provide afloat, mobile, acute surgical medical facilities when called upon to the United States military. There have been additional medical vessels serving in other roles - ambulance vessels, rescue ships, and evacuation ships. Geneva Convention Status Hospital Ships enjoy a special status - this special status was internationally recognized under the second Geneva Convention of 1906 and the Hague Convention of 1907. Specific restrictions for a hospital ship are outlined in Article four of the Hague Convention X: The ship must be clearly marked and lighted as a hospital shipThe ship should give medical assistance to wounded personnel of all nationalitiesThe ship must not be used for any military purposeThe ship must not interfere with or hamper enemy combatant vesselsBelligerents, as designated by the Hague Convention, can search any hospital ship to investigate violations of the above restrictionsBelligerents will establish the location of a hospital ship As well, the convention established that during times of war, hospital ships would be exempted from dues and taxes imposed on vessels in the ports of the states that ratify the treaty. Recently - the San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea was adopted in June 1994 by the International Institute of Humanitarian Law after a series of round table discussions held between 1988 and 1994 by diplomats and naval and legal experts. According to the San Remo Manual, a hospital ship violating legal restrictions must be duly warned and given a reasonable time limit to comply. If a hospital ship persists in violating restrictions, a belligerent is legally entitled to capture it or take other means to enforce compliance. A non-complying hospital ship may only be fired on under the following conditions: Diversion or capture is not feasibleNo other method to exercise control is availableThe violations are grave enough to allow the ship to be classified as a military objectiveThe damage and casualties will not be disproportionate to the military advantage. In all other circumstances, attacking a hospital ship is a war crime. U.S Military Needs in WWI During the first World War (aka âThe Great Warâ), hospital ships were first used on a massive scale â" but in WWI, hospital ships were mainly used to transport sick and wounded military personnel from the Theaters of Operations to Hospital facilities in the United States. World War Two again saw use of hospital ships, but their use was based on who operated them - the Navy wasnât the sole branch of the United States Military to operate hospital ships, for a time the Army also operated them [in fact, the Army operated a fleet of ships of its own, see Ship Hull Classifications â" The Rest of the Armed and Uniformed Forces]. U.S. Military Needs in WWII During World War II, the Army decided it was their own responsibility to transport their wounded, and so wanted to arrange evacuation with their own ships. There were a total of 27 hospital ships in operation for the evacuation of Army casualties. The Army Transport Service operated 24 hospital ships which were manned by civilian crews (employees of the Army Transport Service) and Army medical staff, and the Navy operated 3 Hospital Ships (Comfort, Hope and Mercy) that were manned by the Navy but staffed by the Army Medical Department. However, as noted, the Navy and Army operated hospital ships with different purposes - Navy hospital ships were fully equipped hospitals designed to receive casualties direct from the battlefield and also supplied to provide logistical support to front line medical teams ashore, while Army hospital ships were essentially hospital transports intended and equipped to evacuate patients from forward area Army hospitals to rear area hospitals (or from those to the United States) and were not equipped or staffed to handle large numbers of direct battle casualties. Most of the U.S. Militaryâs hospital ships started out as craft with a different role, and renovated to become hospital ships. The three Navy Hospital Ships (AH-6 USS Comfort, AH-7 USS Hope and AH-8 USS Mercy) were the only vessels built as hospital ships for the U. S. Army fleet - the 24 U.S. Army-operated Hospital Ships were converted from other types of ships. The three Navy ships staffed by the Army served in the Pacific during WWII, while 24 Army ships served first in Atlantic Theaters, with some later being transferred to the Pacific, while others were decommissioned when no longer being needed for evacuation of patients from the European Theater. By the end of WWII, the Navy had 15 Hospital Ships in operation. For that matter, some Navy hospital ships were prior Army vessels. For example, when the Spanish-American War broke out [1896], the passenger ship John Englis was purchased by the United States Army for use as a hospital ship, and renamed Relief. In 1902, the Navy acquired the ship and operated it as USS Relief until 1918, when she was renamed to Repose to allow the name of Relief to be assigned to AH-1 USS Relief. Today's Need for Hospital Ships Though today the United States Navy operates only two dedicated hospital ships (T-AH-19 USNS Mercy and T-AH-20 USNS Comfort), hospital / medical ships of many types have been part of the United States Navy at least since 1801 (the Navy operated its first Hospital Ship during the years of the Tripolitan War [1801-1805]). Both the Comfort and the Mercy are play a role in the U.S. Navyâs Military Sealift Command (MSC). The ships are operated, navigated, and maintained by a civil service mariner staff, or CIVMAR. These are federal government employee who pursues a civil service Navy career. These are United States government-owned ships that support the Navys warfighters around the world. The Navy command is responsible for the hospital and itâs staff. The USNS Comfort and Mercy normally sit pier-side with a reduced number of crew personnel. Typically there will be 18 CIVMARs and around 50 Navy hospital crew aboard to maintain the ship in a âready statusâ. When called into action, the ships will add more than 60 CIVMARs and over a thousand military medical staff and render aid wherever needed. The USNS Mercy is based out of San Diego California. The USNS Comfort is based out of Norfolk, Virginia. Army Hospital Ships Navy Hospital Ships

Extraordinary people seek education and learning. When you want to become the best at what you do, you never stop learning. You never stop improving and honing your skills and knowledge.Nearly every second spent on social media is consumed time. You canât have that time back. Rather than making your future better, it actually made your future worse. Just like eating bad food, ever y consumed moment leaves you worse off. Every invested moment leaves you better off. When you learn something, you should get a return on that learning. Far too many people read books now just to say theyâve read lots of books. If youâre not applying what youâre learning, your consuming and wasting your time. Moreover, the quality of books you read matters. To quote Ryan Holiday, âIf you read what everyone else reads, youâll think like everyone else thinks.âEntertainment is all well and good. But only when that entertainment is an investment in your relationships or yourself. Youâll know if it was an investment if that entertainment continues to yield returns over and over in your future. That may include positive memories, transformational learning, or deepened relationships.Even still, life isnât purely about being entertained. Education and learning is also key. And although both are essential, education will provide far greater returns in your future. The worldâs most successful people are intense learners. They are hard readers. They know that what they know determines how well they see the world. They know that what they know determines the quality of relationships they can have and the quality of work they can do.If you are constantly consuming junk media, how can you possibly expect to create high value work? Your input directly translates to your output. Garbage in, garbage out.Work on yourself, not on your jobâWork hard at your job and you can make a living. Work hard on yourself and you can make a fortune.â - Jim RohnYour work is a reflection of you. If youâre not getting the results youâre looking for, stop looking for better strategies.Instead, look inside. Are you currently the person who would attract the level of success you seek? Your outer conditions are a reflection of your inner reality. As James Allen has said, Your circumstances reveal you to yourself.Where you are right now: thatâs you.If you want something dif ferent: improve you. Most people focus on their craft or their âjob.â Thatâs all well and good. However, youâll get far more bang-for-your-buck by focusing on yourself. 20% of your energy should be devoted to your work. 80% of your energy should be devoted to rest and self-improvement. This is what fuels your work and makes it better than anyone elseâs. Self-improvement is more than books and true rest is renewal. When you get an idea, take a second to pause and reflectWhen you get a core insight, pause and reflect. Pull out your journal and begin connecting that idea with your most pressing goals and priorities and relationships. Quickly, another connection will be made. A deeper insight will present itself. Eventually, youâll stumble upon something very practical. Something youâll need to act on immediately. That âsomethingâ may be a conversation you need to have. It may be an article you need to write that morning. It may be something you can do for someone to dramatically move the needle. You need THAT insight. The one that leads to immediate action and makes immediate impact on what youâre trying to do.This is how you make quantum leaps, day-by-day, in your progression. When youâre getting powerful insights that improve how you live, your life changes. Thatâs why learning every day is so important. If it doesnât suck, itâs not worth doingâThe pain is a kind of challenge y our mind presents - will you learn how to focus and move past boredom, or like a child will you succumb to the need for immediate pleasure and distraction?â - Robert GreeneIn his book, Living with a SEAL, Jesse Itzler tells the story of being inspired by a certain Navy SEAL and consequently inviting him to live at Itzlerâs home for a month. Itzler admitted being in a personal rut and wanted to shake himself out of his routine. Day 1: âSEALâ asked Itzler, âHow many pull-ups can you do?â Itzler squeaked out eight shaky pull-ups. âTake 30 seconds and do it again,â SEAL said. 30 seconds later, Itzler got on the bar and did six, struggling. âTake 30 seconds and do it one more time,â SEAL said. 30 seconds later, Itzler got on the bar and did three, at which point his arms were exhausted. âAlright, weâre not leaving here until you do 100 more,â SEAL stated. Itzler was puzzled. âAlright, weâre gonna be here a long-time. Cause thereâs no way I could do 100.â However, Itzler ended-up completing the challenge, doing one pull-up at a time. Thus, SEAL convinced Itzler that he could do way more than he thought he could. The principle SEAL taught is what he calls the 40% rule - which essentially means people feel maxed-out mentally and physically, and thus stop, when they are at only 40% of their actual capacity. Going past this 40% capacity is when it becomes uncomfortable. Thus, SEALâs mantra, âIf it doesnât suck, we donât do it.âLike Itzler who shattered a mental barrier by completing 100 pull-ups, you too can get out of your rut by pursuing tangible objectives. The concept is: Do something and donât stop until itâs complete, no matter how long it takes.Commitment is external more than internalâIf youâre interested, you come up with stories, excuses, reasons, and circumstances about why you canât or why you wonât. If youâre committed, those go out the window. You just do whatever it takes.â - John AssarafWhat is commitment? How do you know if youâre truly committed to something? When it comes to achieving goals, commitment involves: Investing upfront Making it public Setting a timeline Installing several forms of feedback/accountability Removing or altering everything in your environment that opposes your commitment If youâre truly committed to something, in your mind, itâs as though youâve already succeeded. All doubt and disbelief are gone.If youâre committed to running a marathon, youâre going to put everything in place to make sure it happens. Youâre not going to leave it up to chance.Youâre going to start by signing up for a race (investment). Youâre going to make it public (phase one of accountability). Youâre going to get a running partner who holds you accountable. Youâre going to track your progress (feedback) and account your progress to your accountability partner. Lastly, youâre going to remove things in your life that keep you from running.Commitment means you build external defense systems around your goals. Your internal resolve, naked to an undefended and opposing environment is not commitment. No matter how much internal resolve you have, you will fail to change your life if you donât change your environment. This is where the willpower approach fails. The willpower approach doesnât focus on changing the environment, but instead, on increasing personal efforts to overcome the current environment. What ends up happening?Eventually you succumb to your environment despite your greatest efforts to resist. The environment is more powerful than your internal resolve. As a human-being, you always take on the form of the environments you continually place yourself. You arenât stopped by obstacles, but by easier paths to âlesser goalsââWe are kept from our goal not by obstacles but by a clear path to a lesser goal.â - Robert BraultYou want clarity so bad that youâre willing to settle for lesser goals, simply because the path to getting your true goal is less obvious. When youâre trying to accomplish something big, you have the why but rarely the how. The path to achieving your goals is far from obvious. You have no clue how youâre going to do what you want to do.According to some scholars, fear of the unknown may be the foundat ion of all other fears. In order to avoid the unknown, most people bail on their dreams.Youâre the average of the 5 people around youWhat stands in nearest proximity to you has enormous implications. As Jim Rohn has wisely said, âYou are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.â Similarly, Tim Sanders, former Yahoo! director, said, âYour network is your net worth.âIf youâre feeling stuck and struggling to make the progress you want, take a look around you.If you want to improve and succeed in your life, you need to surround yourself with people who have higher standards than you do. As Tony Robbins has said, your life is a reflection of your standards, or what youâre willing to tolerate. Most people are willing to tolerate unhealthy relationships, poor finances, and jobs they hate. If not so, those things wouldnât be in their lives. Most people are a direct reflection of those around them. If the people around them have lower standards, they drop t heirsâ as well. If the people around them have higher standards, they raise their game.Youâve been around people who, simply by being around them, elevated your thinking and energy. Those are the kinds of people you need to surround yourself with. Those are the kinds of people you need to be like yourself, so that others are better simply by being around you.The quality of your life and the quality of your work is determined by the standards you have for yourself, and the standards of those around you. If youâre fine doing mediocre work, than those around you are as well.If you genuinely want to become better, you must surround yourself with people who will hold you to a higher standard than you currently hold yourself. You want to be around people with a higher and better vantage-point than you have, so that you can quickly learn from them.Your level of talent and âpotentialâ are irrelevant if youâre surrounded by people who donât help you realize it. We all know many people who have unfulfilled potential. Donât let that be you.Successful people initiate, they donât wait (they are agents, not objects)Most people only do what they are asked, doing only the minimum requirement. They need specific instructions on most things they do.Conversely, those who become successful are anxiously engaged in a good cause. They donât need to be managed in all things. They donât just do the job, they do it right and complete. They also influence the direction for how certain ideas and projects go.Most importantly, those who become successful initiate. They reach out to people, ask questions, make recommendations, offer to help, and pitch their ideas.RIGHT NOW⦠there are brilliant opportunities around you. But it doesnât matter how many resources you have. What matters is how resourceful you are with those assets.Right now, the most influential and successful people in your industry are available to you. You could learn from them. You could be mentore d by them. You could collaborate with them. But you have to initiate. You have to be a giver, first. You have to come up with ideas and use those ideas to help other people solve their problems and achieve their goals. This is how you accomplish MULTIPLE goals at one time. You work to learn, not to earn You give you time and energy to the RIGHT PEOPLEâs goals, not your own at first You learn from the right people and promote their work, or help them grow their business All the while, youâre learning and developing deep connections that will take you 10X or 100X further than you could ever go on your own Win-win-win-win relationships are the best. Where there are multiple parties all going further than they could go without each other Initiation always involves some degree of risk. Youâre putting yourself out there and there is a chance you could fail.Every next level of life will demand a âdifferentâ youâEvery next level of life will demand a different you.â - Leonardo DiCaprioAccording to meta-analytic data, confidence isnât what leads to success. Instead, successful behavior is what creates confidence.Unlike dopamine which only lasts short-term, confidence is something you own, once youâve earned it. Short-term pleasure and long-term joy are two fundamentally different outcomes.Once youâve begun succeeding at any endeavor, youâll reach a threshold where you must decide if youâre ready to go to the next level. Most people get comfortable at a certain stage because they donât want to deal with the emotional purging involved in up-leveling.When you decide to up-level and go bigger, your life becomes very difficult for a short period of time. You may have mastered algebra, but now youâre i n a calculus class and feel completely disoriented. As bestselling author, Shane Snow has said, âIf youâre freaked-out, that means youâre a professional.âLobsters are soft squishy creates that house themselves within hard shells with rigid and spiky insides. As a lobster grows, its shell becomes constraining, even suffocating and painful.Once the lobster becomes too uncomfortable: it hides from predators under a rock, jettisons its old shell, and fashions a new one. This process repeats throughout the lobsterâs life. Each of the lobsterâs shells may look drastically different from the previous one. Indeed, in its new shell, the lobster may be unrecognizable to its closest friends and even to itself.Likewise, the various scenes in your life may demand you to be someone you never intended to be. Although you may have been timid and quiet in the previous scenes, your new situation may require you to lead and speak boldly. Each situation is different.Donât plant a tree, plan t an orchardBefore writing the first chapter of Harry Potter, J. K. Rowling planned for seven years at Hogwarts. Harry Potter is one of the most read books of all-time.Before creating the first Stars Wars movie in the 1970âs, George Lucas planned for at least six films and started at episode four, rather than episode one. Almost 40 years later, the entire world continues to be excited with the release of a new Star Wars film. This would not be possible if Lucas hadnât thoughtfully and largely planned ahead. The principle is simple: Donât just plant a tree, plant an orchard. How different might Harry Potter have been if Rowling started the book without any intentions or plans beyond the first book? It may have just been a book about a boy who went to school and killed a bad guy. Perhaps, at the conclusion of that story, Rowling might or might not have decided to write a sequel.Yet, by âbeginning with the end in mind,â Rowling was able to direct and position the first book muc h differently. The first book, although amazing in itself, was a means to an end, clearly leading the reader to the next book. Not only that, but by having a long-term objective, Rowling was able to create a much bigger story. She was able to foreshadow to things the reader wouldnât learn about for sometimes several years! But she planted those seeds early and thoughtfully, and as a result, each book was a continuation of the next, rather than several disconnected and random stories.6 other life-changing ideas Success is taking 20 steps in one direction rather than one step in 20 directions. Why flattery is never a good idea in sales
Why flattery is never a good idea in sales Why flattery is never a good idea in sales Everyone likes compliments. No question about it.Salespeople often get into trouble, though, when they veer into the realm of flattery. The problem is that itâs an insincere and dishonest form of praise.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Usually, the person doing the flattering has an ulterior motive, which isnât hard to spot. Most of us start to feel our sixth sense tingle when someone is overly complimentary.âWhy is this person turning on the charm? What do they want from me?âSure, sometimes if you tell someone how smart they are, theyâll say, âAnd donât forget Iâm handsome, too.â But that person is an egomaniac, and youâre not going to meet many people who genuinely enjoy flattery. For the most part, people tend to see right through it- especially when youâre trying to sell them something.Hereâs why itâs never a good idea to lay it on thick during a pitch:Flattery doesnât come from a place of truth, honesty, or relevancyA sincere compliment is easy to spot. For one thing, it will be relevant to the situation at hand.Always consider where you are and what youâre there to do before you give a compliment. If youâre going into a business meeting, it isnât relevant to comment on someoneâs appearance. When you tell someone theyâre beautiful, what does that actually lead to? They say thanks, and thenâ¦what?Itâs not relevant to what youâre meeting for, and thereâs a good chance it will stop the conversation dead. But letâs say you really admire how this person has gone about building their business. If you want to give them a compliment, focus on that. You might say something like âHey, I read an article about how you built your team and the success youâve had. I really internalized your advice, and Iâve actually been trying some of those methods with my own team. Where did you get your inspiration from? âNotice that the compliment isnât a dead end.An honest and relevant remark opens the door to further conversation. If youâre actually interested in how theyâve built their team or the way they run their business, theyâre going to respond to that interest and start talking about how they operate. If you think twice about why youâre giving a compliment, itâs less likely to come across as inauthentic and irrelevant.Praising someone positions you as a fan instead of a peerOne of the worst things about flattery is simply that itâs unprofessional. Some people want to work with others who suck up to them all the time. Most people donât. They want to work with people they consider peers. But you canât be someoneâs peer if all youâre doing is singing their praises in order to get them to like you or buy your product. In order to gain respect, you have to act in a way that positions you as someone worthy of it. You canât be their biggest fan and still have a real, equita ble working relationship with them. So, when you do meet with people, donât fall all over yourself trying to give them as many compliments as possible. If you walk in the door and immediately start saying to someone, âOh my god, your company is incredible. Iâm in awe of you. Youâre beautiful and wow, you smell great, too!â that person will A) be weirded out, and B) think less of you.Itâs fine to give people compliments, but if you want them to take you seriously, you canât act like a fan.Flattery shows you havenât done your researchSometimes, excessive praise isnât only hiding an ulterior motive. Itâs also hiding ignorance.Everyone wants to work with like-minded people. When you do your research and offer a genuine compliment based on what you know about someone, youâre telling that person youâve done your homework. Whatâs equally important, youâre not wasting their time talking about how incredible their hair looks. But if you tell someone theyâre a fa ntastic leader and an inspiration without backing it up in any way, that personâs first thought is going to be, âBased on what? You havenât given me any indication you know the first thing about me.âFlattery raises questions about your preparation and your goals.People wonder if you did your research. They wonder if youâre buttering them up because youâll do anything to get what you want. They start to think maybe youâre just a dishonest person.Which is unfortunate, because people talk.Once you get a reputation as someone whoâs insincere and dishonest, itâs tough to shake. In fact, youâre probably screwed.Edmund Burke was spot on when he wrote, âFlattery corrupts both the receiver and the giver.â Look, you can be charming. You can be funny. You can even be a little flirty if that works with your personality. But you have to draw a line somewhere, and that line should always fall on the side of professionalism.
